Salt Therapy from Antiquity to the Present Day

Salt therapy has deep historical roots, with the first reports dating back to ancient Greece and Rome, where the healing properties of salt were known for relieving respiratory problems.

During the Middle Ages, Catholic monks in Europe would take patients with respiratory problems to salt caves, where they would crush the salt to release the microparticles into the air.

The history of modern salt therapy begins in the mid-19th century in Poland. In 1843, Polish physician Dr. Feliks Boczkowski noticed something surprising: workers in the Wieliczka salt mines, despite their hard work and constant exposure to dust, developed extremely rare lung diseases compared to the rest of the population.

Dr. Boczkowski concluded that inhaling air saturated with dry salt particles had a beneficial effect on their lungs. This observation gave rise to speleotherapy, the therapeutic stay in salt caves, which evolved into modern, controlled salt therapy.

In 1985, in Odessa, Russia, the first halogenerator device was developed that reproduces salt particles in the air in the form of microparticles, thus making the treatment accessible outside of mines.

The method is now expanding throughout the world, while research and treatments are carried out in wellness centers, hospitals, and home settings.

Clinical studies have shown that when people inhale this salty air, their respiratory system is stimulated and inflammation, infections, and nasal blockages are reduced.

Salt therapy has now evolved with the use of advanced devices that disperse microscopic particles of medicinal salt, offering the same benefits in a controlled environment, such as that provided by the Clearlight HALOONE® device.

"Salt has been used for millennia in various parts of the world by different cultures due to its health benefits and therapeutic effects. In recent decades, salt therapy has gained the trust of more and more people around the world and has spread rapidly to many countries. The positive effects of the treatment last for more than a year. The possibility of combining it with other physiotherapy methods, as well as with pharmacological treatment, makes salt therapy the treatment of choice in mild and moderate forms of bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive bronchitis, post-pulmonary conditions and various other respiratory and skin diseases. The insignificant side effects, combined with the conduct of this treatment in a warm environment, have a beneficial effect on the psycho-emotional state of adult patients and children."

Active VS Passive Salt Therapy

Passive salt therapy is usually found in "salt caves", where the walls are lined with large quantities of salt (e.g. Himalayan salt). Although they create a relaxing environment, these rooms do not have a mechanism for diffusing microparticles of salt into the air. The concentration of particles that can be inhaled is minimal and uncontrolled, resulting in limited therapeutic benefits and mainly psycho-emotional in nature.

In contrast, active salt therapy uses a device that produces dry salt in the air (halogenerator). This device grinds pure salt into microscopic particles and disperses them evenly throughout the space, creating a therapeutic microclimate with a controlled concentration.

This is the method used in clinical studies and is considered the real salt therapy.

It ensures that you inhale the right amount and size of particles for maximum therapeutic effect, making it far superior to simply staying in a room with salt.

Dry Salt Therapy VS Wet Salt Therapy

Liquid salt therapy involves the use of a salt solution in water, such as saline irrigation, sprays, or inhalation of salt vapor.

Although these methods can provide temporary relief by clearing the upper respiratory tract, their effectiveness is limited.

Salt particles, being liquid, are larger and heavier, so they cannot penetrate deep into the lungs and nasal cavities, where toxins and germs accumulate.

In contrast, dry halotherapy produces extremely fine salt particles (1-5 micrometers) that can penetrate deep into the respiratory system, reaching the alveoli of the lungs.

These tiny particles have powerful anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that help remove toxins and reduce inflammation throughout the respiratory system.

Although the HALO ONE device uses a saline solution (water + salt), it uses a specialized vibrating mesh technology to produce micron-sized salt particles (1–10 microns) that are dispersed into the air and are essentially dry when inhaled (fine salt aerosols), so the end result is the same as traditional dry salt therapy (i.e., inhalation of dry salt particles).

How Does Salt Therapy Work with the Halo One Device?

Salt therapy works by inhaling tiny particles of medicinal, dry salt.

These particles, when dispersed into the air by a special device, are absorbed by the skin and penetrate deep into the respiratory system, from the sinuses to the lungs.

The properties of salt are unique:

  • Anti-inflammatory: Helps reduce airway inflammation.
  • Antibacterial: Purifies the air from pathogenic microorganisms.
  • Mucolytic: Helps to liquefy mucus, facilitating expectoration and cleansing of the lungs.

"Salt therapy is a new, innovative intervention that works to prevent respiratory infections by activating phagocytosis and the bactericidal effects of chloride (Cl) ions. It has also shown promising results in the treatment of chronic respiratory disease, such as bronchial asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and bronchiectasis. Its side effects are minimal. It is carried out in a welcoming and friendly environment, which benefits the psycho-emotional state of patients. The therapeutic benefits last for over a year. It is a preferred treatment for a wide range of respiratory disorders, as it can be used in combination with physiotherapy and drug therapy."

"Through the antibacterial action of the Cl ion and the activation of phagocytosis, halotherapy has the power to reduce the frequency of respiratory infections. For people with exacerbations of chronic respiratory disease (COPD), which are contagious and can be fatal, this is a huge benefit. Furthermore, asthma patients who participated in activities and attended meetings experienced a significant reduction in the effect of IgE, as well as an improvement in their chemical and immunological status."

"Salt therapy is a well-known and recognized natural alternative respiratory therapy with benefits in supporting and enhancing allopathic recommendations, mainly in chronic patients. Salt aerosols act on the respiratory mucosa by activating the Na/H pump, thus reducing phagosomal pH and activating lytic enzymes. The chloride ion is toxic to microbial life and, together with the dehydrating effect of potassium, reduces the change in the proliferation of viruses or bacteria in the respiratory tract. Studies have shown benefits from the use of allotherapy and preventive use has also been suggested."

Improving Respiratory Health

Salt has natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, helping to boost the immune system and fight infections.

Inhaling salt microparticles helps reduce inflammation in the lungs, dissolve mucus, and remove allergens and pathogens from the respiratory system.

Salt therapy is indicated for most respiratory diseases, such as:

  • Asthma
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Allergic rhinitis
  • Sinusitis
  • Chronic cough
  • Frequent colds
  • Pharyngitis
  • Tonsillitis
  • Pneumonia (not acute stage?)
  • Cystic fibrosis

"Through the antibacterial action of the Cl ion and the activation of phagocytosis, halotherapy has the power to reduce the frequency of respiratory infections. For people with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) exacerbations, which are contagious and can be fatal, this is a huge benefit. Furthermore, asthma patients who participated in activities and attended meetings showed a significant reduction in the effect of IgE, as well as an improvement in their humoral and immune status.

Salt therapy can help improve FEV1 (forced expiratory volume in 1 second, a measure of lung function that shows how much air a person can forcibly exhale in one second) and reduce exacerbations. A huge variety of lung diseases have been shown to respond favorably to this form of therapy. Improvements in mucociliary motility and clearance, control and elimination of infections, modulation of inflammatory responses, stimulation of the immune system, and regulation of metabolic mediator activity (regulation and adaptation of serotonin secretion and reduction of lipid peroxidation and antioxidant system imbalance) are just some of the mechanisms put forward to explain the observed therapeutic effects."

"Salt therapy has proven its benefits in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of asthma and can be a reliable therapeutic addition to allopathic treatment, due to its ecological and environmentally friendly nature, in order to prevent or prolong the time to exacerbations in patients with asthma. The therapeutic effect of halotherapy in acute or chronic asthma was evaluated in three studies in adults and one in children. Its preventive role was documented in a paper that reported the ability of halotherapy to prevent nocturnal asthma exacerbations. All studies seem to support the overall positive effects of halotherapy as an adjunctive treatment in patients with asthma, with no adverse effects reported."

Skin Improvement

Salt therapy normalizes the PH of the skin, has an antimicrobial effect and cleanses the skin, reduces inflammation and promotes cell regeneration, so it is used for skin regeneration and is effective in a wide range of skin conditions:

  • Eczema
  • Dermatitis
  • Acne
  • Rosacea
  • Onychomycosis
  • Skin aging
  • Psoriasis in the maintenance phase
  • Sebaceous gland hyperfunction (seborrheic seborrhea) - pyodermatitis
  • Thermal skin lesions;
  • Postoperative conditions (cosmetic surgery)
  • Cellulite
  • Pale skin

"The therapeutic and aesthetic effects of halotherapy on the skin have been confirmed by scientific studies. It improves the protective properties of the skin by enhancing the electrophysiological activity of skin cells and activating the activity of ion channels. The pH of the skin is normalized through halotherapy, which also increases firmness by stimulating the processes of dermal and epidermal repair and regeneration. The anti-inflammatory and anti-aging effects of dry salt are a direct result of its ability to increase blood flow to the skin and stimulate cell membrane function. The scientific community has found that it helps in the treatment of chronic skin diseases such as psoriasis, pyoderma and atopic dermatitis.

As a result of the effect of halotherapy on the epidermis and dermis, the skin's ion channels become more active, electrophysiological activity is stimulated, and the skin's protective properties are enhanced. Thus, halotherapy can help both health and appearance. There is an increase in skin firmness as a result of normalizing the skin's pH and stimulating repair and regeneration processes in the epidermis and dermis. The anti-inflammatory and anti-aging effects of dry salt are a direct result of its ability to increase blood flow to the skin and stimulate cell membrane function. In addition, halotherapy reduces the severity of dryness and redness on the skin, while stimulating the skin's natural regeneration processes."

Precautions - Contraindications

Salt therapy is a gentle and safe treatment.

There are usually no side effects other than a salty taste and possibly thirst or a scratchy throat.

Increased coughing and abundant secretions are considered therapeutic because they lead to clearing of the respiratory tract.

Cases of skin irritation are rare and usually resolve within 2-5 sessions. The same applies to cases of conjunctivitis, due to irritation of the mucous membrane (it is recommended to keep your eyes closed when in the salt room).

However, if someone is taking any medication or suffering from a serious medical problem, as well as during pregnancy, please seek medical advice before any treatment. Also, children are recommended to use it with adult supervision.

Not recommended for people with fever, open wounds and serious heart/kidney diseases without medical advice, in severe cases of chronic lung disease, hyperthyroidism, active tuberculosis, acute respiratory disease, high-grade hypertension, neurological disorders, epilepsy, brain dysfunctions, neurological infections and brain trauma, serious infections, acute hematological disorders, infectious diseases, malignant diseases, respiratory system cancer and people with severe depression, neurosis, claustrophobia.

"Salt therapy is an alternative treatment method for numerous respiratory and skin diseases. It has minimal side effects. It is carried out in a pleasant and warm environment, which has a beneficial effect on the psycho-emotional state of patients. This treatment is easily applicable even with children. The positive results of the treatment last for more than a year. The possibility of combining it with other physiotherapeutic methods, as well as with pharmacological treatment, makes halotherapy the treatment of choice for mild and moderate forms of bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive bronchitis, post-pulmonary conditions and various other respiratory and skin diseases."
