What are electromagnetic radiations / electromagnetic fields (EMF)?
Electromagnetic radiation is energy fields created by electrically charged particles and combines electric and magnetic fields.
There are natural radiations (solar and other cosmic radiations, the earth's magnetic field, Shumman waves , etc.) and artificial radiations (from electrical appliances, PPC cables, mobile phones, antennas, radars, etc.)
Electromagnetic radiation is divided into categories depending on their transmission frequency:
< ul class =" arrow "> < li >Non -ionizing low-frequency radiation from electrical and electronic devices, cables of household electrical installations and the PPC network, transformers, etc.</ li > < li >Non -ionizing High Frequency radiation from mobile phones and mobile phone antennas, wireless internet (WI-FI), portable phones and their bases (DECT), bluetooth devices , alarm systems, microwave ovens, wireless game consoles, radio and television signal transmission antennas, military, airport and port radars, meteorological radars, satellites, the police communication system (TETRA), etc.</ li > < li > Ionizing radiation (with a frequency greater than visible light) from X-rays (radiographs), ultraviolet and other cosmic radiation, radon gas that gushes from various parts of the earth, uranium (used in nuclear power plants), radioactive materials found in various rocks, etc.</ li >
How do man-made or artificial electromagnetic fields ( man made EMF) from natural electromagnetic fields?
1. At corresponding emission frequencies, the levels of cosmic rays are infinitesimal compared to artificial radiation

The Earth's magnetic field, which is stronger than most artificial electromagnetic fields, is static. Unlike alternating fields, static fields do not constantly change polarity, causing changes in the alignment of molecules and the orbits of atoms.
2. Artificial radiation has unnatural waveforms with a consistently repeating pattern of amplitude, pulses , etc. </ span >

Blake Levitt, author of of the book “Electromagnetic Fields, A Consumer's Guide to the Issues and How to Protect Ourselves”< a href="#_edn2" id="_ednref2">[ 2]< /a>
" All man-made electromagnetic fields ( EMF ) and the corresponding electromagnetic radiation are fully polarized and coherent, as they are produced by electrical/electronic circuits/antennas with specific geometric shapes. Furthermore, most man-made EMFs, and especially those produced by wireless communication devices/antennas [mobile/"smart" phones and corresponding base antennas, wireless home (DECT: Digitally Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications), "wireless fidelity" routers ( Wi-Fi ) for wireless Internet connection, wireless " bluetooth " connection between electronic devices, etc.], are oscillating and highly variable at any given moment, especially in their intensity. All types of EMFs consist of microwave carrier waves (MW) (300MHz-300GHz), modulated, mainly by Extremely Low Frequency signals (ELF: 3–3,000Hz) or Very Low Frequency (VLF: 3–30kHz), and are included in on/off pulses that are repeated at various ELF rates. In addition, they exhibit strong random variability in their signal amplitudes with frequencies in the ultra-low frequency band (ULF: 0–3Hz). The MW band is part of the broader radio frequency band (RF: 300kHz–300GHz). Therefore, although all WC electromagnetic fields are commonly referred to simply as "RF" electromagnetic fields, they are actually a combination of RF/MW, ELF and ULF electromagnetic fields. Newer 3G, 4G, 5G systems have a basic frame repetition rate (nominally) of 100Hz and exhibit increasing variability in their pulses/signals due to the ever-increasing amounts of variable information they carry (speech, images, video, Internet etc.). 3. Artificial radiation is a very recent addition to the human environment and we have not developed the evolutionary mechanisms to deal with it.

Why are levels of artificial electromagnetic radiation constantly increasing?
Today's unprecedented levels of high-frequency wireless radiation are constantly increasing, due to the proliferation of existing sources and the continuous addition of new wireless applications. Today we are exposed to wireless radiation from, among other things:
- < li >mobile phones and mobile phone antennas</ li > < li >wireless internet (WI-FI)</ li > < li >portable phones and their bases (DECT)</ li > < li >the antennas for broadcasting radio and television signals</ li > < li >wireless alarm, fire detection and temperature control systems</ li > < li >the radio networks of police, private security companies, transport companies, radio taxis, etc.</ li > < li >the Babies Monitors (baby monitors)</ li > < li >PC peripherals such as printers marked " Wireless" ready » to connect to computers wirelessly</ li > < li >wireless mice and wireless keyboards</ li > < li >devices that operate with Bluetooth always on</ li > < li >game consoles with wireless remote controls</ li > < li >WIMAX networks (long-range WIFI for wireless internet provision in entire cities - already implemented in Greece)</ li > < li >the antennas from the wireless internet communities that exist in all major cities in Greece (e.g. Athens Wireless Metropolitan Network)</ li > < li >the construction of antennas for Ministries, embassies, diplomatic missions, Armed Forces, Security and Coast Guard Corps, Civil Aviation Service, etc.</ li > < li >the radars of the army, airports, ports, meteorological services , etc. </ li > < li >the satellites</ li > < li >antennas intended for local data transmission use, e.g. within industrial facilities, stadiums, building complexes, etc.</ li > < li >the interactive school boards</ li > < li >wireless speakers</ li > < li >microwave ovens</ li > < li >the antennas for wireless signal transmission from television to television</ li >
- the HAARP (= High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program)< /li> < li >wireless electricity meters</ li >

At the same time, our exposure to low-frequency radiation caused by electricity has increased significantly due to:
- < li >increased use of electrical and electronic devices</ li > < li >preferring electric solutions for cooling and heating (e.g. instead of oil, natural gas)</ li > < li >overload of the PPC network</ li > < li >eliminating the use of grounded steel pipes for cables</ li > < li >damage to grounding and cable insulation in older homes</ li >
It should be noted that the consumption of electrical energy (and by extension the magnetic fields produced by the cables) shows an annual increase of ~3% and has increased significantly in recent years (increase of >50% in electricity consumption in the period 1990-2009).
< blockquote >
< strong >< em >“Over the past few decades, exposure to artificial sources of electromagnetic fields has been systematically increasing due to the ever-increasing demand for electricity and the ever-increasing spread of wireless technologies (...), with the result that today every citizen is exposed to a complex mixture of electric and magnetic fields of various frequencies, both in their home and work environments” </ em ></ strong >

Isn't only ionizing radiation harmful?
The separation of electromagnetic radiation into ionizing and non-ionizing radiation creates the false impression that the only biologically harmful process is ionization.
Ionizing radiation (= radioactive) activates the production of free radicals in the cells of the human body and can cause changes in the structure of chromosomes and the cell membrane (mechanisms associated with the development of cancer).
In contrast to non -ionizing radiation, which is mostly artificial and has been recently introduced into the environment, radioactive - ionizing radiation has always existed during the evolution of the human species, which means that we have developed some mechanisms to adapt to it.
On the contrary, the continuous and ever-increasing exposure to non -ionizing radiation from the electrical grid, mobile phone antennas and the dozens of new wireless applications that are added daily can, in the long term, cause significant health effects, through mechanisms unrelated to ionization.

< strong >< em >“A major modern threat to public health is man-made electromagnetic smog. This non- ionizing electromagnetic pollution is particularly insidious because it escapes detection by our senses – a condition that provokes a dismissive attitude towards the need for our personal protection. Yet, the nature of this phenomenon is such that there is literally no place to hide” </ em ></ strong >
Dr. Gerard Hyland , biophysicist, University of Warwick , 2-time Nobel Prize nominee in Medicine [4]
The human body exhibits a multitude of biological reactions even at low (non-thermal) levels of artificial radiation: increased cell proliferation, production of stress proteins, increased free radical activity, calcium efflux, increased blood-brain barrier permeability, coordination of hydrogen-oxygen bonds, etc.
The International Commission on Electromagnetic Safety (IECEM) guide analyzes the non-thermal effects and mechanisms of interaction of radiation with living organisms.
The potential for health effects depends not only on the intensity of electromagnetic fields but also on the duration and periodicity of exposure.
Short-term and periodic exposure, even to high-intensity fields, may not be dangerous since the human body can usually repair any damage (possible exceptions are people with weakened immune systems, the elderly, pregnant women and children).
On the contrary, continuous and simultaneous exposure to multiple radiation sources leads to the chronic induction of biological reactions that have long-term, uncontrolled effects on human health.

What mechanisms of action of artificial radiation are associated with causing a multitude of health effects?
style =" text-decoration : underline ;">Cellular amplification of weak electromagnetic signals</ span >
Previously, there was the view that low-frequency radiation does not have enough energy (photons) and therefore our body could not distinguish them from the natural electromagnetic waves produced by its body ( thermal noise ).
However, as research since 1977 ( Adey and Bawin ) has shown, organisms can perceive very low-intensity exogenous electromagnetic signals and show a greater reaction to them than to stronger ones.
Gilbert and Rodbell the Nobel Prize in 1994. G proteins integrate multiple signals outside cells and activate various cellular amplification systems. Because of them, a single photon of electromagnetic energy is capable of initiating a massive influx of calcium into cells, activating many biological functions. [6]

Panagopoulos et al. ( 2025)< a href ="#_edn7" id ="_ednref7">[ 7]< /a> provide a comprehensive and unified biophysical and biochemical explanation for the adverse biological and health effects of anthropogenic electromagnetic fields ( EMFs ), with a particular focus on extremely low frequency and wireless communication fields.< /p>
The basic mechanism involves the disruption of voltage-gated ion channels, leading to oxidative stress and DNA damage, which in turn contribute to a wide range of diseases such as cancer, neurodevelopmental disorders, infertility , and electromagnetic hypersensitivity.
The Voltage-Gap Forced Oscillation Ion Channel (IFO-VGIC) model shows that EMFs disrupt calcium/potassium/sodium ion fluxes through VGICs in cell membranes.
The abnormal influx of calcium ions (Ca² ⁺ ) into the cells , activate enzymatic pathways ( e.g. , NADPH oxidases , synthases monoxide of nitrogen ) which produce active oxidizing roots (ROS).
Overproduction of ROS leads to oxidative stress (OS), DNA damage, inflammation, and cellular dysfunction.
Oxidative stress is a unifying biological pathway that explains various observed health effects, such as cancer, neurodegeneration , infertility , and electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS).
Production proteins their stress
One of the main causes of health effects according to Dr. Blank , a professor at Columbia University and researcher in bioelectromagnetism , is the fact that our cells have a stress response to artificial radiation, as is the case with other environmental toxins ( heavy metals, etc.)
Human DNA functions as an antenna that receives even low-power artificial electromagnetic signals of low and high frequencies and gives instructions for the production of stress proteins.
The stress adaptation mechanism activates our hormonal system to deal with any challenge presented. Unfortunately, it is designed to function temporarily.
Chronic production of stress proteins:
- < li >associated with sleep problems, depression, headaches, gastric and dermatological problems, obesity, heart disease, asthma, infections, etc.
- </ li > < li >depletes the immune system and leads to the appearance of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, Lyme disease , lupus, Crohn 's disease , multiple sclerosis, diabetes, etc.
- </ li >
The above effect is a possible explanation for the results of a significant number of studies linking artificial radiation to leukemia, breast, skin, brain, testicular and salivary gland cancer, thrombosis, diabetes, miscarriages, male infertility, Alzheimer's , insomnia, neurotic disorders, depression, etc.
< blockquote >
< strong >< em >“Recorded carcinogenicity in humans and animals, DNA damage/genetic damage, functional survival (OS) findings, and reductions in reproductive capacity due to DNA damage in ovaries or sperm or embryonic death, all point in the same direction:</ em ></ strong >
Man - made electromagnetic fields ( EMF ) cause damage to functional survival and DNA, infertility , cancer and other related pathologies.
< strong >< em >The reason why the same effects are observed in a wide variety of animals, such as mammals, birds, insects, etc., and humans, is that all biological and health effects start in cells, and all cells are essentially identical in all animals, humans, and even plants.</ em ></ strong >
< strong >< em >They have identical membranes, ions, ion channels and pumps, biomolecules such as DNA, RNA, proteins, etc., water, ROS, identical cellular organelles such as nuclei, mitochondria, ribosomes , endoplasmic reticulum, etc., and very similar metabolic processes and regulatory mechanisms.</ em ></ strong >
These similarities at the cellular level between all animals and humans are far more fundamental than differences in volume, mass, shape, macroscopic functions, intelligence, etc. As a result, any effect caused by electromagnetic fields on animal cells, such as functionality, DNA damage, etc., would be expected to be caused in human cells as well, and vice versa.”

What are the health effects of non- ionizing artificial electromagnetic fields ( man made EMF);
Very low levels of exposure to electromagnetic fields cause various biological reactions in humans, such as increased free radical activity, calcium efflux, increased permeability of the blood-brain barrier, synthesis of stress proteins, disruption of intracellular communication, coordination of hydrogen-oxygen bonds, platelet aggregation, increased histamine production , etc.
Numerous studies have shown that artificial radiation is associated with the cause or worsening of childhood leukemia, breast, brain and auditory nerve cancer, insomnia, asthma, Alzheimer's , infertility , miscarriages, depression, cardiac arrhythmia, neurological diseases, obesity, diabetes, autistic syndrome, hyperactivity , attention problems, etc.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified low-frequency magnetic fields and high-frequency electromagnetic fields as possible carcinogens, while radon is considered a proven carcinogen.
The BioInitiative report Report summarizes thousands of studies on the effects of non- ionizing radiation and constitutes the most comprehensive documentation of biological effects and safe limits of long-term exposure.
On the Powerwatch website one can find a list of studies on the effects of electromagnetic fields by source and effect. Over 60% of the studies show health effects, while only 15% show no effects.
The Oceania Radio Frequency Scientific Advisory Association (ORSAA) is an independent scientific organization that investigates the impact of electromagnetic fields on health and has a free categorized database. According to its announcement on 5G networks, from an analysis of 1995 studies, 68% show significant biological effects on health, such as neurodevelopmental disorders in children, neurodegenerative diseases in adults (dementia, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease ), infertility , serious effects on reproductive tissue, immune disorders, allergies, autoimmune diseases, as well as oxidative stress damage associated with many chronic diseases.
A similar platform is available at EMF-Portal of Aachen University , which systematically summarizes research data on the effects of electromagnetic fields.
Many international scientific organizations have issued warnings about the effects of electromagnetic fields and propose the creation of new, stricter exposure limits, including EMFSCIENTIST and the International Electromagnetic Field Alliance (IEMFA). Their members include Greek scientists from the Biology departments of the universities of Patras and Athens.

When are safe limits for exposure to electromagnetic radiation exceeded?
The current exposure limits to non- ionizing electromagnetic radiation, in Greece and in most countries, are based only on thermal effects from high-intensity fields and do not take into account:
- < li >the latest research linking non-thermal exposure levels to significant health effects</ li > < li >the dramatic increase in electromagnetic pollution in recent years</ li > < li >the continuous and simultaneous exposure of the population to multiple sources of radiation and</ li > < li >the different absorption of radiation by sensitive population groups (e.g. pregnant women, children, etc. )</ li >
Exceedances of legal limits are not frequent and are usually recorded very close to strong radiation sources, such as radio and television antenna parks.
However, in recent years, many scientific bodies have proposed new, lower safe exposure limits to protect the public from artificial electromagnetic fields. They are based on recent research showing that non-thermal levels of radiation lead to serious long-term health effects.
One of the bodies proposing lower limits is the scientific group BioInitiative Working Group , which includes international scientists from leading universities, former presidents of the Bioelectromagnetics Society, consultants from the European Environment Agency and other distinguished scientists.
Exceeding the recommended exposure limits is very common today both indoors and outdoors and may be due to mobile phone antennas, cordless phones, modems, all kinds of wireless devices (even from neighboring homes), transformers, cables and PPC electricity distribution, old or faulty electrical appliances and electrical wiring with worn insulation or faulty connections.
See the recommended exposure limits here.

Bioinitiative Report (report by an international group of scientists that summarized the data to date from more than 2000 studies on the effects of artificial electromagnetic fields)
“The exposure levels in the vast majority of all the aforementioned studies were significantly below the officially accepted exposure limits for ELF and RF EMFs , which are recommended by a private organization called the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection ( ICNIRP ) to prevent discharges in humans in the case of ELF and acute heating of living tissue in the case of RF/WC EMFs . It is remarkable that this organization arbitrarily ignores the overwhelming evidence for the non-thermal effects that constitute the vast majority of the effects of anthropogenic EMFs , and yet, governments adopt its recommendations rather than follow the Precautionary Principle, which dictates the obvious, that no new technology should be implemented unless those promoting it have proven its safety beyond reasonable doubt.”

How can I tell if I am exposed to increased radiation levels?
Measurements of invisible electromagnetic fields are the only way to determine whether the places where you spend most of your time are exceeding the recommended exposure limits to artificial radiation due to visible and invisible radiation sources (mobile phone antennas, cordless phones, and modem- routers) . Wi-Fi , electrical appliances, cables, pylons, transformers, etc.).
You can measure electromagnetic fields in your area by purchasing or renting a radiation meter or calling an engineer to measure electromagnetic field levels.
The continuous increase in electromagnetic pollution makes radiation measurements more timely and necessary than ever, especially for the most vulnerable population groups (pregnant women, children, the elderly and the sick).
By measuring electromagnetic fields, you will also be able to significantly reduce your daily burden, by identifying and avoiding electromagnetic hotspots and in many other ways that are detailed in  ;the  ; guide with protection tips& nbsp;of Home Biology or following the suggestions provided by the Home engineer Biology with the  ; Electromagnetic Load Control Service.
Are radiation measurements only needed when there is a significant radiation source nearby?
High radiation levels in a space are not only related to the proximity to an obvious external radiation source but also to the presence of invisible sources and/or known sources that most people do not suspect produce significant fields.
For example, common wireless devices that you or your neighbors use (such as wireless phone bases and wireless modems) often expose you to higher radiation levels than neighboring mobile phone antennas due to closer proximity and better propagation inside homes.
Similarly, statistics show that the most common cause of high magnetic field values is the low-voltage power lines of the Public Power Company (PPC) that are present everywhere (and especially in densely populated areas they are usually overloaded), and not the more "famous" high-voltage pylons.
To all this, we can add a multitude of invisible sources of electromagnetic fields that are around us without us realizing them, such as:
- < li >camouflaged mobile phone antennas on false chimneys, solar water heaters, billboards, etc. (mobile phone antennas are now found in almost every neighborhood and camouflaging them is a common tactic of companies to avoid problems with neighbors)</ li > < li >antennas for amateur radio, police radio networks , radio taxis, transport companies and security forces, radars for airports, ports, the military, meteorological, etc.</ li > < li >wireless devices from neighbors (cordless phones and modems, baby monitors) monitors , wireless alarms, mobile phone signal amplifiers, etc.)</ li > < li >underground cables and PPC transformers</ li > < li > ungrounded electrical appliances</ li > < li >problems in electrical wiring (damaged insulation, errors in circuit connections, etc.)</ li > < li >radioactive building materials or leakage of radioactive radon from cracks and pipes</ li >
Where are higher radiation values usually recorded?
< ul class =" arrow "> < li >In densely populated areas due to the presence of more mobile phone masts, higher power consumption and a denser electricity distribution network</ li > < li >In homes where low voltage cables pass very close to high-use areas (bedrooms, living rooms, etc.)</ li > < li >In homes adjacent to mobile phone antennas, high-voltage lines or PPC transformers</ li > < li >In offices due to the abundance of electrical and wireless devices</ li > < li >In apartment buildings due to the presence of numerous wireless phones and internet networks</ li > < li >In older homes or homes where electrical conversions have been made</ li > < li >On the highest floors of buildings which, due to their location, are usually more exposed to wireless radiation than ground floor or basement areas</ li > < li >On low floors with poor ventilation due to elevated radon levels</ li >
For which population groups are radiation measurements most important?
For pregnant women and children, as their increased exposure to electromagnetic radiation may have  ;irreversible effects on the mental development of minors& nbsp;according to some scientists.

< ul class =" checklist "> < li >Windows and balcony doors are usually the most vulnerable points for radiation penetration from mobile phone antennas, radars, etc. and can be shielded by installing an adhesive film or an electromagnetic shielding curtain.</ li > < li >The shielding membranes have a reflective metal coating, are self-adhesive, & nbsp;are placed internally on any type of glass, they also provide sun protection and you can install them yourself or with the help of a cooperating workshop.</ li > < li >The shielding curtains are made from fabrics with patented weaving of threads with copper and/or silver and have the advantage of providing protection even with the windows/balcony doors open (convenient in the summer), while they can also be transported in the event of a move. You can order the fabric and sew it yourself or have it come ready sewn into a curtain for hanging on a rail or curtain rod.</ li > < li >The first choice for internal or external shielding of walls / ceilings that face mobile phone antennas, neighbors' wireless devices, etc. is shielding paint.& nbsp;It is a black acrylic paint, which can be easily used as a first coat by any professional or amateur painter. It can be painted over without difficulty, with conventional plastic or acrylic paints (1-4 coats of coverage will be required depending on the final color - e.g. 3-4 coats for white paint).</ li > < li >In cases where radiation values are quite high (>10000μW/m2), we recommend the solution of metallized fabric HNV100 (material: polyester, copper, nickel - shielding rate 100dB - cost 26-65€/m2 depending on the order quantity), which can be glued as wallpaper, at least on the sides near high-use points facing the source.</ li > < li >Other alternative solutions for walls/ceilings are the shielding tapestries K150& nbsp;or the stainless steel shielding mesh V4A10-V4A03 (stainless steel - shielding rate 40-50dB - cost 11-65€/m2 depending on the type and quantity ordered - for installation behind plasterboard).</ li > < li >The HNV100 electromagnetic shielding polyester fabric, as well as electromagnetic shielding paints, wallpapers and mesh, have good breathability (shielding materials such as solid metal sheets are not breathable, retain moisture and make walls vulnerable to mold). They do not contain toxic elements (paints and wallpapers produced by YSHIELD are continuously certified by the TÜV-SÜD organization). Volatile substances will probably be present if glue is used for the wallpapers or the HNV metallized fabric. The paint and mesh are more resistant over time, compared to the HNV100 material or wallpapers.</ li >
